A big day! Yes it was!! 19th Sep.2019
It was a great day for the Kisesini community and the local institutions. Commissioning a 160 meter borehole funded by Ronnie Letten through Epiroc and implemented in collaboration with We Effect and their partner Machakos Cooperative union. The ocassion was graced by His Excellency the Machakos County Deputy Governor. This will greatly reduce the time spent in fetching water and water related illnesses that are prevalent in the area as alluded to by the incharge of the local dispensary. The community members came in droves with their donkeys to draw this precious commodity.
In the endeavor of LECOM to generate more of its income it has diversified to green house farming, a project as seen in the pictures above, has proved to be very viable. The same project is intended to be a demonstration plot for the affiliate societies to copy as an alternative income generating activity for their societies.
Machakos District Co-operative Union Limited was established in 1964 and registered under the Co-operative Societies Act in 1972 as an umbrella organization for primary organizations in Machakos District. MCU represents 81 affiliate co-operative societies with more than a total of 70,000 individual producers. Besides these co-ops are 26 women groups with a membership of more than 4000 women producers who are mainly in the production of hand crafted products like sisal baskets( Syondo), mats and other sisal products.
