The sisal baskets displayed here have been woven by producers/weavers of Machakos cooperative union. The baskets are beautiful handmade masterpieces from sisal twines from the aloe family. Weaving the sisal baskets is a skill which is inherited and is a cultural investment. Membership in the groups is open and voluntary, decision making is participatory and leaders are democratically elected from amongst themselves.
Child labour is not used in the weaving of baskets.
The returns from selling the sisal baskets improve the standard of living of the women and contribute to the improvement of community amenities such as education and health services
