The woodcarvings displayed here have all been handcrafted by members of co-operative societies in Machakos and Makueni counties, Kenya, following an old tradition of woodcarving. Each craftsman uses simple tools made from animal hides, local wood and spring steel fashioned into adzes and knives. No machinery is used in the process of transforming a tree trunk into hundreds of items both decorative and functional. The product lines illustrated represent the most popular giftware and decorative accessories made by members of the co-operatives. While production norms are maintained, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Simplicity of form and exquisite craftsmanship are hallmark of Akamba masterworks.
